For our second Aviation Americas leg we are heading west out of Utah to the State of Oregon. 

Taking off from Salt Lake City we proceed west over Idaho before descending into the beautiful Portland.

Portland International Airport sits in the Columbia River valley between the snow-capped peaks of Mount Hood to the east and the Coast Range to the west, offering pilots stunning views of the Cascade Mountains and the winding Columbia River on approach. The airport features three parallel runways with approaches that showcase Oregon's diverse landscape, from dense forests and rolling hills to the urban sprawl of Portland below. There are challenging terrain considerations and dynamic weather patterns that can shift from clear mountain views to low coastal clouds, making for engaging approaches with excellent Pacific Northwest scenery.

KPDX is home to one of the most ambitious airport carpet designs in aviation history, featuring a distinctive teal and blue geometric pattern that became so beloved by travellers that when it was replaced in 2015, public outcry led to the old carpet being sold as souvenirs and even inspiring its own documentary film. The original carpet's cult following was so strong that pieces now reside in museums and the new design had to incorporate elements of the original to satisfy devoted fans.
