Cancún International Airport was built in the 1970s as part of a government-planned tourism development project that transformed what was once a small fishing village of just 120 people into one of the world's most visited beach destinations. The airport's Terminal 4, opened in 2017, was specifically designed to handle the massive influx of American and Canadian tourists, and the facility now ranks as one of the busiest airports in Latin America despite serving a city that didn't even exist as a major settlement 50 years ago.
